【摘要】Using the micro-big data of traditional non-tenure-track researchers (called “iron rice bowl” or bianzhi) from 1980-2021 in China, we examine whether the school-level tenure track shock has a direct spillover over effect on non-tenure-track scholars and propagate in their knowledge production networks. We find the implementation of the tenure track at the school level significantly reduces their publication quantity and quality, especially for coauthored publications in English. More importantly, those non-tenure-track researchers who experienced such policy impose substantial knowledge production loss, both from the quantity and quality aspects, on their non-tenure-track coauthors. The negative propagation effect in the network is much more pronounced on the cooperative knowledge productions than on the sole ones. Heterogenous effects suggest that the propagation effect is primarily driven by the school level’s tenure-track policy of these non-tenure-track coauthors who have the same research field, work in the same city, and are of the same gender. Overall, our results shed some light on the propagation of tenure-track shock and its greater impact in the knowledge production network.
