Abstract:This paper investigates the role of the social network in human capital investment. Employing a national survey of middle schools in China and exploiting students in randomly assigned classrooms, we find strong evidence of positive peer effects on participation, cost, and time in student's shadow education. While the heterogeneous analysis shows mixed results for males and females, empirical evidence consistently suggests that peer effects are more pronounced for students from high-income families. We document that education expectations of students and parents are primary channels through which peers affect the student's shadow education behaviors.
